The
term "ShireRieve" comes from Merry Olde England. Barons and
other Royalty were granted land from the king. These lands were called
counties or "Shires". They were given the right (by the king)
to collect taxes and enforce laws. The men who collected the taxes for
the Land Owners were called "Rieves"...Hence Shirerieves.
That is where our term "Sheriff" comes from.
